People in Naidkhia village of Sumbhal, in north Kashmir's Bandipora district, held a protest demonstration against the alleged “occupation” of an agricultural land by army for setting-up of a new camp in the area.
Locals told Kashmir Dispatch that Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Battalion is planning to construct a camp for which they have already erected large number of tents on the land which measures about 50 kanals. “We already have four to five army camps in the vicinity, then what is the need of another camp,” locals questioned.
The land rimmed on the outskirts of Naidkhia, is the “only” piece of land left for agricultural activities. in the area. “It is the only piece of land left for us for agricultural, irrigation and other activities in the area,” locals said.
The villagers were protesting on roads demanding immediate removal of the RR battalion tents. “The villagers have threatened to intensify the protests into an agitation if the Government fails to remove the tents and the army from the area," sources said.
The move comes amid claims made by army that it was removing bunkers, from civilian areas of Jammu and Kashmir, in a bid to create a sense of normalcy among the Valleyites.
When contacted the army PRO, JS Brar, refused to make any comments on the issue.
Meanwhile, SHO, SDPO among other officials have already reached the spot.
Protests were going on at the time of filing this report.
