Kashmir will erupt again if Afzal Guru is hanged: Experts

Srinagar, December 15 : The stepped-up pressure by Hindu extremist parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the Indian government to hang Afzal Guru, who is facing death sentence in a fake parliament attack case, will result in another uprising in occupied Kashmir, say experts
.
The Indian government has put the onus on President Pratibha Patil regarding the final decision on Afzal Guru’s mercy petition, as experts in Srinagar say the implementation of the death sentence could inflame anti-India sentiments in the occupied territory alarmingly.
The popular belief in Kashmir upholds that the situation would get turbulent if Afzal Guru was hanged to death with the revival of intifada in preceding years.
Observers say that the sentiment in the occupied territory has been strongly against Afzal Guru’s death sentence, adding law was not allowed to take its due course.
“A sense which is prevailing is that a fair trial mechanism in Afzal Guru’s case was tactfully avoided and it is political scoring which is being given the priority in India,” says a legal expert.
“The SC ruling that Guru has been rewarded the death sentence for satisfying the collective conscience of nation is in itself apprehensive,” Khurram Pervez, a human rights activist, told a local news agency.
