Lawyers in Kashmir to strike work from tomorrow

(UNI) The lawyers in the Kashmir valley will observe a day-long general strike tomorrow to protest against the government decision to transfer registration of documentation of property to revenue department officials.

The decision to stay away from work in all courts in the Kashmir valley was taken at an extra ordinary meeting of the executive committee of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association presided over by president Mian Abdul Qayoum, a spokesman of the bar said here today.

He said the strike will be observed against the government move to transfer the registration powers from civil courts to revenue authorities.

‘We want continuation of the registration powers of the legal documents with courts,’ he said.

Spokesman said the lawyers will not appear before the courts across the valley tomorrow.

He said the government move was unacceptable and the Bar Association will take all possible measures to safeguard the interest of the lawyers.

He said lawyers in the entire Jammu and Kashmir are demanding that the registration powers shall continue to vest with the civil courts in the state.

‘The Govt proposal is unreasonable and unjust as it directly affects the interests of the general public and the interests of the lawyers fraternity in particular,’ he added.

Bar Association once again reiterates its principle position and demand that government shall desist from any such move to transfer the registration powers to revenue authorities, the spokesman said. UNI
