‘Immunity to Abdullahs, NC against accountability’
Srinagar, Oct, 24 ::: Cautioning the centre against dealing with J&K through power brokers PDP President Mehbooba Mufti today said New Delhi must build bridges with the people of the state rather than playing favourites which had led to most problems in the region.
Addressing a large rally of youth here today Mehbooba said J&k had become an island of darkness, corruption, misgovernance, favouritiesm and nepotism as a result of denial of justice, democratcy and fair play in J&K. “Without accountability of rulers as in rest of the country problems of the state wont go away” she said
The large rally of youth, starting from the party office here was led by Mehbooba Mufti along with senior party leaders, legislators and youth leaders including Mohd Sartaj Madni, Ab Rehman Veeri, Nizamudin Bhat, Mohd Khalil Bandh, Syed Bashir Ahmed Zahoor Ah Mir, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Mushtaq Ah Shah, Mohd Ashraf Mir, Senior Leaders Tariq Hameed Karra, Qazi Mohammed Afzal, Aga Syed Mehmood, Ab Hameed Kosheen, Anjum Fazilli, Youth General Secretaries Er. Nazir Ah Yatoo and Showkat Gayoor, Yasir Reshi, Ab Waheed Dar, Bashir Ahmed Mir, Nisar Ah Mandoo, Ashok Bhat and others . Carrying placards against misgovernance and corruption under the present NC led coalition the young PDP workers marched through main streets of Srinagar before they were intercepted by police. They also carried an effigy of the government symbolizing the culture of corruption it promotes.
Mehbooba said while there was an anti corruption movement going on through out the country J&k had been deliberately kept out of the application of laws on this vital subject. The people of J&k feel isolated and neglected while they watch ministers, bureaucrats and businessmen fill jails on corruption charges and in contrast the corrupt politicians being protected and defended in the state. She said governments in Maharashtra and Karnataka had tumbled on lesser charges than the ones faced by Omar Abdullah. As a result Yaddyurappa was in jail and Chavan had been replaced. Similarly, Jayalalitha is being questioned in the court and denied even an expemption from personal appearance she said. “Here a man walked into the CM’s home, discussed money matters of the family, left in a sick state and died: still no cognizance is taken and even an FIR is not filed” she said pointing out the double standards practiced in application of laws and morality. She said even Anna Hazare and his team spearheading the anticorruption campaign was now called to account but in J&K the rulers and in particular the Abdullah family enjoyed immunity against accountability. “They are treated above law” Mehbooba pointed out.
Mehbooba said the central leadership was conveying a message to the people of the state that J&K’s accession was only with Abdullah family which was above law and could get away with anything as a favorite. She said when 120 innocent youth mourning their kin or friends were gunned down last year they were dubbed as Lashkar Toiba militants and denied justice in true tradition of NC. Earlier also the NC had imposed state terror through task force and SOG which was ended by PDP in 2002. “We were fewer then but with growing strength of PDP we want to warn the NC and convey to centre that our fight against corruption wont stop short of its objective” Mehbooba said. “How is it that the centre tolerates the money allocated for development of the state going into the pockets of ruling politicians and the treasures of Abdullah family?” Mehbooba asked.
The PDP president said NC had systematically destroyed institution as a result of its pampering by centre. Inspite of overwhelming participation by people in Panchayat elections the Panchayat Raj system was far from established. Municipal elections have not been held for two years and state legislature is not allowed to function in true democratic way, she said. Even as the cash for vote scam in parliament is now being tried in court and high and the mighty are in jail, in J&K a similar case was not even investigated, Mehbboba said while referring to the BJP members having voted for the ruling coalition in last council elections.
