United Nations, October 11 : Emphasising that Kashmiris’ right to self-determination is recognised by UN Security Council resolutions, Pakistan has called for a peaceful settlement of the decades-old Kashmir dispute that would lead to durable peace and stability in South Asia.
Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Raza Bashir Tarar told the General Assembly’s Fourth (Decolonization) Committee on Monday said that the partition agenda of sub-continent would be incomplete without the resolution of Kashmir dispute.
Speaking in a general debate, the Pakistan delegate said that the negation of the right to self-determination often ignited regional conflicts that threatened peace and security. “Such conflicts cannot be swept under terrorism or religious rivalries,” he added.
Raza Bashir Tarar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to finding a peaceful settlement of the dispute with India that was acceptable to all sides, especially the Kashmiri people.
The remarks on Pakistani delegate on Kashmir noted by committee delegates as constructive in nature.
Tahir Hussain Andrabi, Counsellor at Pakistan's Permanent Mission to the UN, during a debate at the General Assembly said that several Security Council resolutions had recognised Jammu and Kashmir as the disputed territory.
Tahir Hussain Andrabi added that the UN resolutions clearly stated that no electoral exercise conducted by Indian authorities in Kashmir could substitute a free and impartial plebiscite to be held under UN auspices.
