Amid raging controversy over apostasy, vice-chairman national minority commission Dr H T Sangliana led high-level delegation met Chairman Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq here on Thursday.
According to a spokesman of the amalgam, the delegation called upon Mirwaiz at his Nigeen residence and expressed their concern and reservations over the minorities particularly Christians in Kashmir Valley.
Mirwaiz, who is also chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Muttahida Majlis Ulema (MMU), assured the delegation full security to the minorities in the Valley.
“In light of the Islamic teachings and tenets, we are duty bound to protect them. It is also moral responsibility of majority community to offer protection to the minorities,” he added.
However, Mirwaiz underscored that some NGOs, on the pretext of people’s welfare, take advantage of the turmoil and offer monetary greed to gullible masses for conversion.
“Mirwaiz assured the delegation that there was no danger to any minority community living with us for centuries under the principle of live and let live,” according to the statement.
“The recent covert incidents that have come to fore is matter of concern for us and we jointly endure to bare them all and put a true picture before people and international community,” Mirwaiz added.
