Govt rents out prime Mumbai property for peanuts

Srinagar, Mar 16 : A recently submitted report to Government of Jammu and Kashmir by the committee on Environment has revealed that state government has thrown away property worth hundreds of crores for peanuts in Mumbai's Malabar area.
According to the report, a delegation headed by committee chairman Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri accompanied by other legislative council members and officials had took the stock of the properties belonging to state government in Mumbai during its 10 day tour this year.
"The committee took stock of properties belonging to state in Mumbai at Malabar and at advent building Mumbai which houses a guest house of 1436Sq.ft, comprising two bed rooms, a drawing room and a kitchen.


The committee was curious to know the fate of Kashmir house at Malabar hill and sought detailed reports from Joint Resident Commissioner of J&K who is located at Mumbai," the report reveals.
It further reveals that state Government owned land measuring 5802 6/9 Sq yards at Mount Nepean Sea Road, Malabar Hills commonly known as Kashmir House worth hundreds of crores which have been thrown away for peanuts.
According to the report, State government had an agreement dated 17th June 1981 with M/S Sanghvi Constructions Pvt. Ltd and land was leased out to the constructor for a period of 90 years commencing from firstday of June 1991 against the ground rent of Rs 5 Lakh per annum.
"The Sanghvi's have constructed a massive building on the site having multiple duplex flats and have rented them out earning huge amount at the cost of state property." Committee Chairman, Dr Veeri had observed it and appealed state government to adopt remedial measures and explore the options as to get back the prized property of the state.
Committee has also warned the state government to take steps as the property Flat No.11 Engineering building sleater Road Tardeo, Grant Road and Show room/shop/office/ at 25 Chinar WTC as state is about to slip it from possession.
Besides showing serious concerns about the JK properties in Mumbai, the committee on Environment has also raised several other issues related to tourism, energy and others.
"Our Government should take a lead from Tamil Nadu state so far as leather, energy and tourism are concerned. Our state has good potential in all these sector but have not exploited it to the level of Tamil Nadu has done by earning more than 11000 crores of rupees per annum.
Similarly, in the energy sector we have the potential of generating more than 20,000 MW of clean hydroelectric energy which is yet to tap till date." Committee report reveals.
It further says that Tamil Nadu has excelled very well in Tourism and other sectors also especially the 'vision 2023' document.
Dr Veeri who is heading the committee on Environment said, "it is for the first time in legislative history of upper house that a committee opts for study tour and indulges itself in six business days out of ten days tour.
The wealth of information and comparative study is not only appreciable but in consonance with the required inputs needed for giving developmental directions to state of Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of developmental inertia caused due to past 20 years of unfavorable security scenario." adding he has tried his best and hope government utilizes the informative study report and take steps.
