Terming the mass graves in Kashmir as proof of government forces’ “war crimes”, Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani Monday alleged that the top brass of army and police was “directly responsible for the heinous crime.”
Rejecting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s suggestion for setting up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to probe the issue, Geelani urged the United Nations General Secretary Ban-ki- Moon to send a “fact finding” team to Kashmir immediately.
“The state government, in order to save India from international embarrassment, wants to bury the serious issue of mass graves by playing deceptive tactics,” he said addressing a press conference at his Hyderpora residence.
“Was anyone convicted in Bijbehara, Gaw Kadal, Sopore and several other such massacres? Or the rape and murder of Tabinda Gani and the two Shopian women, Asiya and Neelofer? The fact is that New Delhi and its puppets in Jammu and Kashmir have systematically denied Kashmiris justice over the past 63 years. Therefore, this talk of TRC is just ploy to mislead the people,” Geelani said addressing a press conference here at his Hyderpora residence.
“There is absolutely no doubt that these unknown graves hold the bodies of innocent civilians , who were killed in custody or fake encounters. Furthermore, these graves have been discovered in areas having huge military presence,” he said
Referring to Machil fake encounter, Geelani said, “Killing ordinary civilians for the sake of medals and promotions has become a routine for the army."
“It’s a profitable business for the Army’s top officers and generals as well,” he said, adding, “The majority of officers in the Indian army is communal and has been involved in the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Muslims for the past two decades.”
“The international community can understand the level of gross human rights violations taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, a place where even top police officer is involved in extra-judicial killings,” he said, demanding that an international agency probe. Geelani said the revelations of mass graves had frustrated the government and it was now targeting the pro-freedom leadership.
“The police has turned my house into a sub-jail. I am not even allowed to meet my close acquaintances and the police has snapped our cell phones as well,” he said.
Geelani said former Prime Minister of Pakistan administered Kashmir Sardar Attique khan scheduled visit to Kashmir and meetings with pro-India leaders “will not deter the people of Kashmir from pursuing freedom.
“It doesn’t matter as we have already made it clear, time and again, that Kashmiris will never accept any solution against the UN resolutions on right to self-determination.”
He also ridiculed Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah’s charges that Geelani had collected money in the name of innocent people.” What can one expect from a person who says that the holy Quran was revealed by Ram!” he said.
