London, Sept. 16: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has arrived in London from Geneva where he attended the parliamentary debate in the House of Commons which lasted for more than three hours.
According to a statement of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz watched the debate from the reserved speakers chamber. “The debate was first of its kind during the last 63 years and was initiated by Steve Baker MP. It was concluded by minister for Asia Alister Burt,” Mirwaiz said from London over phone.
“Steve Baker while moving the debate referred to the human rights violations taking place with impunity in Kashmir and pleaded that in order to bring peace and prosperity in the region global fraternity should respond to this challenge,” he added.
Mirwaiz said Baker pleaded that providing democratic self determination to the people was a much needed remedy along with total demilitarization.
“Lyn Brown MP proposed an international commission to probe the atrocities. It was endorsed by other members of the parliament,” Mirwaiz said.
“Voice was raised about fact finding mission by an independent body like EU parliament. Concluding the debate Minster for Asia welcomed India-Pakistan engagement and stressed to resolve the issue according to the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The debate took place on the 4th international day of democracy,” he added.
The Mirwaiz welcomed and thanked the British parliamentarians for their efforts to help the people of Kashmir to realize their basic rights includaing the right to self determination.
