SRINAGAR, Jan 24 : In violation of the norms of the central sponsored health scheme, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), the doctors allegedly denied all the medical and other facilities to a pregnant woman in Kulgam district. The authorities, however have set into motion the investigations into the matter.
Under the scheme the ASHA workers engaged by the health department are supposed to take care of the pregnant women in their respective localities and ensure their delivery in the hospital. They also have to ensure that the women get all the proper medical care and other monetary benefits under the scheme.
Reports said a poor pregnant woman, Salma, was taken to hospital by the concerned ASHA worker and her husband for delivery last week only to be sent back to her home by the doctors on duty.
“As the woman reached the hospital yesterday on the advice of the ASHA worker who was looking after her the gynecologist not only refused to examine her but misbehaved with her also. Tough the lady insisted that she has completed her pregnancy period and has come to hospital on the advice of the ASHA worker but the doctor refusing to examine and admit her in the hospital asked her to go home saying she still has two months for delivery,” sources said.
They said the woman went back home she delivered a baby after which the concerned health worker lodged complained with the chief medical officer against the gynecologist who denied medical services to the pregnant lady under her supervision.
“The health worker in her complaint to the CMO said the woman could have also developed complicacies while delivering the baby at home. Denying medical care to her was against the norms of the scheme,” sources said.
Acting on the complaint the authorities, Kulgam, initiated investigations into the matter.
When contacted chief medical officer (CMO) Kulgam, Dr. Abdul Rashid, said that they have taken a serious note of the complaint against the doctor.
“I received the complaint against the gynecologist. We will seriously investigate into the matter as to why the pregnant lady was denied medical services she was supposed to get under the scheme. If complaint is proved true we will take stern action against the gynecologist,” CMO said.
However, when contacted gynecologist Dr. Rehana against whom the complaint has been lodged denied the allegations saying that the patients can level allegations against the doctor any time.
“It has become a practice for some people to level allegations against doctors. I do not remember who exactly is this woman as on that day I was alone in the hospital and the rush of the patients was huge. So let the authorities investigate the case and everything will come to fore,” she said.
