Kashmir| Returning hydro power projects: Civil society group to move court

A civil society group spearheading the 'movement' for return of hydro power projects from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Tuesday warned they would approach the court if the state government fails to take back the power projects.
“The NHPC has failed to provide lease or ownership rights documents on Salal, Dul Hasti and Uri Civil. The NHPC had been given deadline up to November 12. But, it seems the government is not serious,” Bashir Assad, an active member of the Group said.
Sources said the Group members met Chief Secretary Madhav Lal and Commissioner Secretary PHE and Irrigation, Mehboob Iqbal in Jammu. The group handed over a letter “Demand of Justice” to the Chief Secretary in which the government has asked what steps it has taken against the NHPC after the November 12 deadline expired.
Under State Water Resources Act, the action by the government could range from penalizing the Corporation to even stopping water supply to its projects.
Sources said, under the Act, the Corporation, which is setting up another five to seven projects in the state, had to complete formalities including obtaining license from Irrigation Department within one year to harness state water resources for power generation from four power projects presently run by it - 480 MWs Uri-I, 390 MWs Dulhasti, 690 MWs Salal and 120 MWs Sewa-II.
“Though the deadline expired on November 12, state government has taken a casual approach after blowing trumpet on the issue for almost a year,” the civil society group members said.
They warned that they would approach the court incase the government fails to take over the projects.
