Jammu Kashmir State Congress President
Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Wednesday threatened to launch nationwide agitation if the
state assembly elections aren’t held with six months of presidential rule.
Election Commission is looking at clubbing assembly poll with
Lok Sabha elections due in April-May 2019
“It (deferring assembly polls in state) will be totally undemocratic
because we (Congress) is maintaining this since last June that elections should
be held on time and now if these elections are delayed we will start a
nationwide agitation against Central Government as well as state administration,”
Ghulam Ahmad Mir told reporters at Omoh Verinag after addressing a convention
of ‘first time’ voters.
He said that deferring polls in Jammu Kashmir will raise
questions at National level viz-a-viz the situation prevailing in the state.
Mir said that in coming months, Congress will start a
massive movement unite the country and fight back communalism. “Our
constitution has given us secular India therefore in coming days we will unite
Inida,” he added.
He said that Prime Minister Modi is visiting state to inaugurate
those projects which UPA-2 started in the state. “This will be his last visit
to Jammu and Kashmir as Prime Minister. He has just two weeks now and he can’t
befool people of state,” he added.
Mir said that Prime Minister’s visit to state was just a
political reach out and it has nothing to do with the developmental activities.
Earlier, former Chief Minister and Vice-president Jammu
Kashmir National Conference, Omar Abdullah alleged that Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) were approaching New Delhi and
seeking deferment of elections in the state.
Elections for the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly are
due to be held in 2019 concurrent with the Indian general election, 2019.
