Kashmir remains below freezing point, Dal partially frozen

Srinagar, Jan 9 (PTI) The freezing cold maintained its firm grip over Kashmir Valley, as mercury stayed below sub-zero in the whole region, but there was some respite for the residents as electricity was restored after three days. The drop in temperature has resulted in formation of a layer of ice even on Srinagar roads while water supply pipes are frozen. Dal Lake and other water bodies in the Valley were also partially frozen due to the intense cold. Communication woes continued for the people of the Valley with the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Kashmir's only road link with rest of the country, remaining closed for the fourth day as authorities were trying to clear Ramban-Banihal and Batote-Patnitop stretches.
Due to the closure of the highway, over 2,200 vehicles were stranded at Jammu, Nagrota, Udhampur, Chenani and Ramban. Officials said electricity supply was restored in all parts of the Valley following restoration of Kishenpur-Wagoora and Kishenpur-Pampore transmission lines. Due to unprecedented snowfall in higher reaches of Pir Panjal mountains, a fault had developed on Kishanpur-Wagoora Transmission Line at Pogal Paristan besides affecting as many as 19 grid stations. In order to maintain essential services, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had directed disconnection of power supply of the VIP grid including at his residence. Cold wave, meanwhile, intensified across Kashmir Valley with maximum temperature also plunging below freezing point for the first time this winter. Srinagar city recorded a low of minus 4.2 deg C and a maximum of minus 0.5 degree, Met department said. The city had recorded the coldest day yesterday at 0.6 deg C. The official said maximum temperature in Qazigund, Pahalgam and Kupwara stayed around minus 0.8 deg C while Kokernag recorded the coldest day at minus 1.9 deg C. The minimum temperature recorded at Qazigund and Kokernag was minus 7.4 deg C followed by Pahalgam (minus 6.8 deg C) and Kupwara (minus 5.1 deg C).
