Illegal soil extraction resumes in Bijbehara

 The residents of Panjpora Asthanpora-Bijbehara allege that the soil extracting mafia has resumed the illegal extraction of soil from a patch of state land after striking a deal with revenue employees.

They informed that the mafia put two JCB’s on work and over seven tippers on ferrying extracted soil to different areas of Anantnag district.


Villagers said that earlier Tehsildar Bijbehara had stopped the illegal soil extraction but now mafia has resumed it again. They demanded stern action against the offenders.

Locals alleged that soil extracting mafia is in league with revenue department employees who allow them to violate the laws so brazenly.

Nisar Ahmad, a resident from the area said that scores of tippers, tractors and bulldozers can be seen laden with soil from the state land and ferrying it to different places. “Each tipper makes at least fifteen rounds in a day,” he said.

Nisar said that mafia mixes the extracted soil with sand at Sangam Bijbehara and also uses extracted soil in filling roads sides.

 “We raised the issue with the concerned department. Tehsildar Bijbehara stopped it but now surprisingly they have resumed it,” the residents said and demanded action against the offenders.

Tehsildar Bijbehara, Ishtiyaq Mohiduin admitted to have received complaints about illegal soil extraction.

“We acted swiftly, stopped illegal soil extraction and then seized the vehicles and later fined them,” he said.

 Tehsildar Bijbehara said that he had also placed the concerned Patwari under suspension.

He sought help from villagers and requested them click the pictures of vehicles and their registration numbers so that stern action against them is initiated.
