Parnaik, Hasnain meet Vohra, discuss security


In the backdrop of heightened debate over revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir, army’s northern commander Lt General K T Parnaik and the General-officer-in-Command 15 Corps, Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain, Monday briefed Governor N N Vohra here about the security scenario in the state.

A defence ministry spokesman based here said the army officers called upon the Governor immediately after their arrival from the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Kupwara district and “apprised him of security scenario.” The meeting comes amidst Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s announcement on Friday last that AFSPA, which provides armed forces sweeping powers and impunity, will be revoked from certain areas in the state.
As per media reports, the Defence Ministry were opposed to the withdrawal of the act in the state but despite the opposition, Chief Minister wants to go ahead with the decision to lift the “black law” from the state.
Earlier, General KT Parnaik and Lt Gen Hasnain visited troops on the Line of Control in the Kupwara Sector. The GoC briefed him on the operational preparedness and the situation Loc. “Thereafter he interacted with troops deployed on the Line of Control in High Altitude Areas,’ the spokesman added.
