Kashmir minister escapes life bid, cop killed, 3 injured

A senior National Conference leader and minister in the Omar Abdullah-led government Sunday escaped an attack on life. However, a policeman guarding him was killed and three others including a civilian were injured in the attack by suspected militants.
Sources told Kashmir Dispatch that Ali Mohammad Sagar, who is the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, was attacked near Shah Mohallah in Nawa Bazar locality this evening.
The minister, sources said, was attending a function at his ancestral home when the attack took place in which three of his guards and a civilian were injured.
"Three police personals Gulzar Ahmad, Mohammad Yaqoob and Feroz Ahmad got injured in the attack," a police official said.
Gulzar Ahmad succumbed to his injuries, he added.
“The minister was inside his ancestral home when the militants fired at his escort vehicle which was parked outside,” the officer said.
Reports said the minister had just entered his home when the attack took place.
Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reinforcements were rushed to the spot to escort the minister back to his official residence in the uptown area.
This is the first such attack by the separatist guerrillas in the heart of Srinagar and comes at a time when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been advocating revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Srinagar city.
