Anantnag, May 5: Hundreds of people on Sunday attended the
funeral of slain Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Gull Mohd Mir who was killed
by suspected militants on Saturday late evening at his home in Nowgam-Verinag
village of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Family members, relatives and neighbors of the family participated
in funeral prayers of slain BJP Leader who was also the district vice-president
of BJP in Anantnag district and had unsuccessfully contested 2014 assembly
election from Dooru assembly segment of Anantnag. However, most of state BJP
leaders and workers who had worked with him didn’t turn up to attend the last
rites of slain leader.
Zahoor Ahmad Mir, slain leader’s son told Media that on late
Saturday evening at around 9:30pm, gunmen bragged inside their residential house
and killed his father.
“I blame SSP Anantnag, Altaf Ahmad Khan for this (killing of
father). My father had two PSO’s and they were withdrawn few months ago. We approached
SSP Anantnag many times and requested him to provide protection but he didn’t. He
sought reports from CID and other agencies and even told us to get a letter
from Party General Secretary Ashok Koul. CID and others submitted reports and
we too procduced letter of Ashok Koul but he ignored it and told us to approach
Munir Khan (Munir Ahmad Khan ADGP Security),” Zahoor told Early Times.
Condemeing the killing of BJP leader Gull Mohd Mir, BJP General
Secretary (Org) Ashok Koul said that it was collective failure of state administration
and government.
“its failure of state administration and government. I
myself talked to SP and SHO concerned thosundas times and requested them to
provide protection to him (slain BJP leader) but nothing happened,” he said
adding his killing is a great loss to party in Jammu and Kashmir.
Koul along with Anantnag district President Rafiq Ahmad Khan
and others visited slain leader’s family in Nowgam Verinag to express
condolences on behalf of party leadership.
SSP Anantnag, Altaf Ahmad Khan on being contacted told Early
Times that it wasn’t his domain to provide security cover to slain political
leader.
“Yes, he approached and I requested him to approach ADGP security
as the matter falls in his domaim,” he said.
Khan said that the slain political leader had tow PSO’s including
an SPO but both of them were withdrawn as per the government order.
Pertinent to mention here, in the month of April this year, the
Home Ministry revealed that security cover of 919 previously protected persons
in Jammu and Kashmir was withdrawn. 919 protected persons including slain BJP Leader Gull Mohd
Mir were declared ‘underserving’
Pleading anonymity, a CID official from Kashmir told Early
Times that persons associated with mainstream political parties were facing immense
threat from militant groups and they deserve proper security cover.
“The order to withdraw security cover of protected persons
is a disaster and it has only put the life Mir like people at risk,” he added.
