Srinagar: At least 24 persons were injured when a train on way to Srinagar from Qazigund derailed in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Wednesday. This is the first incident of derailment in Kashmir ever since the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flagged off the first train in Valley in 2008.
While the railways confirmed that the mishap occurred due to “technical fault”, it has nominated Chief area Manger to carry out detailed probe into the incident.
Official sources said the engine--Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) and two bogies of the train derailed at Sedura village, 7-kilometrs from gateway town of Qazigund, at 12:10 hours, as the driver overshot the station stop by nearly 200 metres following technical fault.
They said that out of 45 onboard passengers, 24 persons suffered injuries in the mishap. All the injured were evacuated Trauma hospital Qazigund and condition of all the injured persons was out of danger, they added.
Soon after the mishap, Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag Kifayat Hussain Rizvi along with other officials visited the spot to monitor the situation. A team of railway officials also visited the spot to investigate the cause of the accident.
“As per the prima facie report, the mishap occurred due to pressure drop (in brakes of the train) and the driver failed to stop it,” Chief Area Manager (CAM), Northern Railways, Opender Singh told Press Bureau of India.
The railways have ordered a detailed probe into the incident and have nominated CAM, Northern Railways to probe the incident.
“We have to inquire as per the railway norms and I have been nominated as the inquiry officer by the railway,” Opender Singh said.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon has asked Chief Area Manager, Northern Railway to enquire into the matter and furnish a report.
